Greedy? Yes. Slow on the uptake? Yes. However, over 60 million songs were pirated last year (that were tracked). No amount of legwork is going to make people who can get things for free to pay for them. It's a technological dilemma more than anything.
That being said... over 60 million songs were tracked being pirated last year. On one hand, being one of the millions doing it lowers your chance to be targeted greatly. On the other... they are tracking you...
