Thread: Favorite Experimental bands?

    Default Favorite Experimental bands?

I've been getting pretty experimental lately and it amazes me just how weird yet wonderful music can get. Some of the bands I've been listening to lately are:

The Angelic Process (Beautiful, raw, and powerful I highly recommend this one)
    Behold The Arctopus
    Tera Melos
    The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble
    ISIS (Earlier material)
Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine.
    Zozobra
    Rosetta
    Neurosis
"The time has come," the Walrus said,
    "To talk of many things:
    Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--
    Of cabbages--and kings--
And why the sea is boiling hot--
    And whether pigs have wings."

    Daft Punk is good.

Buckethead is probably the closest thing to experimental so far. Even then he's more avant-garde/progressive. For those of you who are wondering what the difference is or what classifies as experimental here are a few guidlines:

Experimental-Unusual starts and stops, unconventional/bizzare melodies (or lack thereof) with chaotic or technical structure, blending of completely different genres (for example grind and atmosphere), wide range of vocals, usually is undefinable by current known genres

E.G. Have you heard Tera Melos? It's weird, they go from complex noise to soothing jazz intermissions to perky pop-punk riffs.

Avant-Garde-Large focus on improv (jazz and blues for instance), basic or prerecorded melodies play while the lead guitarist/saxophonist/whathaveyou goes to town, definite genre but uses techniques uncommon in said genre.

E.G. Jimmy Hendrix was a blues player who used heavy distortion effects and long-winded solos to create a unique acid driven type of blues/rock.

Avantasia - The Best Project EVER!!
Avantasia is a project of the German singer Tobias Sammet's, which comes together the most diverse artists of the metallic world scenario, between them:
Andre Matos(Angra,Shaman,Virgo,Vyper,...),Kai Hansen (Gamma Ray,ex- Helloween),Sharon Den Adel(Within Temptation), Timo Tolkki (Stratovarius) and Michael Kiske!!
    "How would it be?
    a world without hate,
    without heaven,without hell

no wars, no arms...no religion,no God
    just your own truth"

I have all of Avantasia's albums Milward and I agree they are very good, considering the talented individuals involved it shouldn't be a surprise. It's always nice to see Metal artists get together and stretch their creative muscles and I also am a big Edguy fan as well.

Absouletely, if you like Animal Collective you should also check out Panda Bear. He is one of the members of Animal Collective and does some solo work under that name the album "Person Pitch" in particular is incredible, I like it more than the majority of Animal Collective (and I deeply enjoy Animal Collective).

I like Neurosis and Isis from that list. But honestly? Behold the Arctopus? They aren't even music as far as I'm concerned.

Anyway, Animal Collective is probably my favorite experimental band right now.
