I have listened to a few of their songs, but for some reason I just never pursued them or collected their albums. I was going to move this to the Classic/Prop rock sub-forum Noak, unless you convince me they belong in this sub-forum instead.

It's a he and not they. Too bad you never pursued his music, when you get into it it's impossible to get out. Also, I don't feel he belongs in the Classic Rock forums because he's in my opinion not Classic Rock, he's Avant-Garde, which is why I put him in this forum.

Okay Noak, I looked into Captain Beefheart and he was considered way ahead of his time and a huge influence on bands that followed. I have listened to one of his albums, I can't remember the name, and it just didn't work for me. I'll revisit his work when I get the chance.

Thats a hard choice, though 'Trout Mask Replica' was my first Beefheart experience (excluding 'Willi The Pimp' by Frank Zappa) and will always have that special place in my heart.

Trout Mask Replica FTW, in my book. "Dachau Blues" is pretty hard for anyone to top.

I now have three of Captain Beefheart's albums:

Lick My Decals Off Baby

Safe As Milk

Trout Mask Replica.

There that looks like a good place to start with the Captain.

Captain plays some pretty "sick" psychedelic blues. I forgot about him...gonna add him to my shopping list!

Captain Beefheart is awesome, his/their (Beefheart and the Magic Band) music is an acquired taste really, so it's definitely not for everyone. My favourite album is probably Decals, with Trout Mask not far behind. Decals feels like a more organised and 'professional' version of Trout Mask. I don't think Beefheart has made one bad album though, even the straight-up 'commercial' releases he did (which are generally held in a much lesser regard to his earlier and later avant-garde albums), Unconditionally Guaranteed and Bluejeans & Moonbeams had some great songs imo.

Beefheart is a genius in my opinion, and definitely was way ahead of his time. Still to this day his music sounds as fresh and 'out-there' as it probably did upon release in the late 60's and 70's (and early 80's for his last album, Ice Cream for Crow).

I have these as well but just picked up Doc At The Radar Station which is pretty good too.

I would just like to state that I have a huge amount of music from the 60's but still think Safe As Milk is probably the best album of said decade. Such an incredibly satisfying, addictive album that has not aged at all.
