I would call the stuff they did between proper songs for their
Man and the Journey concerts borderline avant-garde. But only in the live context.
At one point, footsteps seems to be coming from every direction thanks to a crude quadraphonic sound setup, controlled by their "Azimuth Coordinator." (lol!)
And the stuff they did with Syd (some of which you find in the
Man and the Journey stuff, namely "Pow.R.Toch" recycled as... if memory serves.. "The Pink Jungle") I would call avant-garde, but again, with the live performance qualifier.
The soundtrack to
More has some very trippy moments. It probably comes closest to an "avant-garde" album.. some would differ I'm sure. Maybe parts of
Ummagumma though it's conventional in its own ways.
