Thumbs up Official Phil Collins Thread

Philip David Charles "Phil" Collins (born 30 January 1951 in Chiswick, London) is an English singer-songwriter, drummer, keyboardist and actor best known as a drummer and vocalist for English progressive rock group Genesis and as a Grammy and Academy Award-winning solo artist.

Collins sang the lead vocals on eight American chart-toppers between 1984 and 1989; seven as a solo artist and one with Genesis. His singles, often dealing with lost love, ranged from the drum-heavy "In the Air Tonight", to the dance pop of "Sussudio", to the political statements of his most successful song, "Another Day in Paradise". His international popularity transformed Genesis from a progressive rock group to a regular on the pop charts and an early MTV mainstay. According to britishhitsongwriters.com he is the forty-eighth most successful songwriter in U.K. singles chart history based on weeks that his compositions have spent on the chart.

Collins' professional career began as a drummer, first with obscure rock group Flaming Youth and then more famously with Genesis. In Genesis, Collins originally supplied backing vocals for front man Peter Gabriel, singing lead on only two songs: "For Absent Friends" from 1971's Nursery Cryme album and "More Fool Me" from Selling England by the Pound, which was released in 1973. On Gabriel's departure in 1975, Collins became the group's lead singer. As the decade closed, Genesis' first international hit, "Follow You, Follow Me", demonstrated a drastic change from the band's early years.

His concurrent solo career, heavily influenced by his personal life, brought both him and Genesis commercial success. According to Atlantic Records, Collins' total worldwide sales as a solo artist, as of 2002, were 150 million.

Discography

1981: Face Value
1982: Hello, I Must Be Going!
1985: No Jacket Required
1989: …But Seriously
1993: Both Sides
1996: Dance Into the Light
1999: Tarzan: An Original Walt Disney Records Soundtrack
2002: Testify
2003: Brother Bear: Original Soundtrack

Great thread Dreams! You know it's funny because I throw out these demands and I'm like "Bryan! Don't tell her what to do? She's got a mind of her own!" Then I see how great they end up and I'm like "I'm going to make a list of bands for her to profile! In fact, I'm going to give her ones that I like whether she knows them or not so she can do a thread on those too!" Seriously, I recommend you do as much of these as possible because I learned details about Phil Collins that I wasn't familiar with and feel like listening now! I think this forum is going to do just fine! Peace!

Much appreciated Bry! I love this guy so it was easy. When creating these types of threads, I always try to keep in mind the people that may not be the most familiar with the artist, so I’m glad to see even a music obsessive like yourself was able to learn something here.

Your suggestions are always appreciated and I’d be happy to make a thread for any of your favorites any time!

And just for fun:

Hearing him live gives me chills...even when he messes up!

I am a pretty big Phil Collins fan myself, I remember growing up listening to Sussudio in the car with my mom, and I still crank up in the air tonight, such an incredible breakdown when the drums kick in.

Excellent thread!

I've already expressed my appreciation for Phil, but here I go again. He was the glue that made Genesis click. His work with Peter Gabriel and Brian Eno is without peer.

Thanks Zandar.

Even though he may not be able to drum anymore, thankfully he still has that amazing voice!

Phil Collins...his songs sound the same and I hate that 80s hit music. Whenever I think of him that American Psycho sex scene comes to mind with "Studio" playing.

Phil is one of those extraordinary talents...I've always had a huge amount of respect for him...

His contributions to Genesis was that of sheer brilliance and he proved homself to be a hit factory in his solo work.

His success speaks for itself.
