In recent years there have been fewer and fewer new musicals, yet shows like "Phantom of the Opera" have made millions of dollars. What do you think; is the musical dying? Could it evolve into another art form?
I'm not a big fan of musicals, and I doubt that they will ever be as popular as in years past but some of the songs that come out of that genre are very good. I hope that there is always enough support to keep the traditional musical flame burning, but you never know what the future is going to look like things change and sometimes very quickly.
Some musicals are still making some decent cash along the way but in my opinion the older musicals are a lot better (I'm not trying to defend or offend anyone and if I am I'm sorry). Phantom of the Opera is just amazing! I love playing the songs on the piano.
I've never seen the musical version of "Jesus Christ Superstar", but it was one of the few musical movies that I actually went and saw when it came out in the mid 70's. The movie starred Ted Neely as Jesus and the production was very well done. Probably one of the three maybe four musicals that I will watch again.
