Default Why are some classical music listeners such snobs?

Reading the answers to the 15yr olds question really disturbs me. I think the best sign of intelligence is someone who can appreciate all music, not just one specific type. If any music sounds like "noise" to you, then maybe you should have your ears checked. Unless of course the music is meant to sound like noise as rebellion against the status quo. And even then, it would be art.
I can understand going through a specific musical phase (hey I hated country music for half my life before realizing that all music categories have variations) but to classify "pop" negatively is to limit your own musical horizons.
Seriously, aren't there some classical pieces you hate? I sure hate Dvorak more than I hate Britney Spears.
I can understand not liking something because it is discordant but hating an entire musical genre? To speak in the language of kids today, that's gay.

How many classical music listeners do you actually know that are snobs?
There are snobs everywhere, in every field. Baseball snobs try to make you feel bad if you don't know Ty Cobb's lifetime batting average or Willie Mays'hat size. Computer snobs try to make you feel bad if you don't know a ROM from a RAM.
Classical music has a reputation for snobbery, but in fact the audience is full of wonderful people who aren't snobs at all, people who come to enjoy the beauty of the music. These people know that what really matters is your willingness to open your mind and heart to the music.

I love metal, hard rock, the oldies and classical.

I think some are snobs because it takes so much time to learn all of the names, dates, and titles of all of the songs. So they feel special because they can tell you that the piece you are listening to is by Chopin and it's his Etude Op. 10 No. 12 in C minor. It makes them feel smart and special. Sadly most of the music's meaning is lost to these snobs because they're too busy trying to look smart.

A snob is someone who looks down on other because they think they are better than everyone else. This can be based on musical taste, fashion etc.

I think disliking someone simply due to their taste in music is more ignorance than just snobbery.

i like all types of music but music from the Baroque period is my favourite. The only genres of music i really cannot abide are rap, country and the modern manufactured pop music that everyone seems to like for 2 seconds then says its rubbish the next day. I would not call this a taste in music, this attitude to music is simply followings the sad, faddists that only like something because everyone else does and because it is in the charts.

I like music that has a certain measure of 'talent' involved in making it, rather than something that someone who cant even read music has 'produced'.

Don't worry. You'll find snobs everywhere. It's not the music that makes them snobby, it's one's view of themselves connected to the music.
