sustained note(s); most remarkable effect? All artistic mediums have their own expamples of representative extremes: tallest building; longest bridge; smallest "priceless" paintings(largest); those which mix components(oils with glass, jewels, etc.).
Note: please consider no compositions say, post Stravinsky: none of the modern, contemporary era: seemingly there are no longer any rules or guidelines to follow - anything goes. So, only "traditional" classical compositions. What are your candidates for examples of the following:
(1) most notes in a single phrase, passage(no cadenzas).
(2) longest period(s) of silence(not between movements, etc).
(3) longest sustained note(s).
(4) longest sustained crescendo(i.e. Prelude to "Das Rheingold" approximately 5 minutes)
(5) longest, continuous tympani, kettledrum roll.
(6) most remarkable, impressive "effect"(use of gong, bells, multiple fff full orchestral chords, etc.).
(7) most unusual instrument, or combination(s).
