I tend to go more for the traditional, particularly when they're closely related to traditional folk/blues and roots (Appalachian and others). I think you can trace more or less direct lines from people like Woody Guthrie on through Jimmie Rodgers and on to Hank Williams to Willie Nelson, and those are the traditional artists I enjoy.
Having said that, there is a group of older artists that for some reason I just can't take - people like Porter Wagoner, Buck Owens and Ernest Tubb. I can't quite figure out why.
I also think there should be a distinction made between new acts that are steeped in traditional influences, or at least sound like they are, and those who appear to exist as little more than a marketing exercise. Kasey Chambers, for example, is one I really, really enjoy. The guy who does the Ford truck commercials is not. I'm kind of on the fence about Shania.
Of course, you have to realize that for someone my age, Kris Kristofferson and Emmylou Harris are still what I think of when I think of "new country."
