This was a pretty good year for music, I gotta say.
1: The Antlers - Hospice: One of the most touching records I've ever heard. Bordering on shoegaze but mixing in some fantastic lyrics and melodies, this album puts me in a weird state between melancholy and elation every time I hear it.
2: The Flaming Lips - Embryonic: Trippy, ear drum obliterating, fuzzed out excess. Like Miles Davis' "Female Dog's Brew" for the 23rd century. Way better than "At War With the Mystics."
3: Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest: Perfectly orchestrated, arranged, and produced. That's all I gotta say about this one.
4: Dan Auerbach - Keep it Hid: Dirty blues and soul in a style that impressed me way more than "Attack and Release." Grungy but polished, an album that takes you through all sorts of genres.
5: The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love: Overindulgent, repetitive, excessive: that's what I thought when I first heard this album. But then I really got into it and saw the character themes, appreciated those chugging metal riffs, and saw that this thing is a work of art.
May 2010 be even better!
