Sniper's Promise - The Wolfe Tones

Written by OIRA Volunteer Joe McCann in the early stages of The Troubles.

The song is especially sad because it is sadly ironic. The song tells of an Irish Republican shooting a British soldier. He then shows mercy and lets the soldier live. Not long after he wrote the song, an unarmed Joe McCann was shot in the back, then shot 10 times as he lay wounded on the ground.

Soldier - Harvey Andrews

This song tells of the selfless death of a British soldier named (Sgt.) Michael Willetts. While stationed in Northern Ireland during The Troubles, a bomb was planted in a police station by the PIRA. After discovering it, Sgt. Willetts put himself between the bomb and a handful of civilians. It went off, and he was instantly killed, but he managed to save the lives of the civilians.

There really is particular song that will make me cry but at my age I have lost so many friends and loved ones, so on occasion I will hear a song that I can associate with one of them and it will emit emotions....and those are private.

This paticular rendition of Ava maria. My father loves this. Love my father.

That's a beautiful piece with a very interesting history Cia. The instrumental part is J.S. Bach's Prelude No. 1 from the Well Tempered Clavier. But the sung melody and words were added by French composer Charles Gounod over 100 years later to make the piece you hear in the video.

Pretty kewl huh?

Karen Carpenter does such a great job too. What a tragic life for someone so talented.
