Ok, stole this off another forum, but it was quite an interesting discussion.

Obviously you can't say "everything" because everyone who says that doesn't mean it at all. You can start naming a laundry list of obscure bands and genres, but the questioner's eyes will glaze over very quickly.

We all know it's sort of a empty question to begin with, but it's a valid enough question for "regular people," so what do you say? Assume you know nothing about the tastes of person asking you. Is it best to just change the subject?

Also, in order to avoid asking said question yourself, how do you usually go about finding what other people are into?

Since I have problem looking at "regular people" in the eyes when they tell me they love Bon Jovi and Celine Dion, I usually go for a vague "er... classic, old school rock and more modern indier stuff... so what did you say you do for a living?"

As for finding out about people's taste, if said person's record collection is nearby, I give it a good look, otherwise, I just ask the damn question. I'm more into asking the good old "Top 5 Recording Artists?"

The good kind. Or I rattle off a long list of uber obscure shit they'll have never heard of.
