Greedy? Yes. Slow on the uptake? Yes. However, over 60 million songs were pirated last year (that were tracked). No amount of legwork is going to make people who can get things for free to pay for them. It's a technological dilemma more than anything.
That being said... over 60 million songs were tracked being pirated last year. On one hand, being one of the millions doing it lowers your chance to be targeted greatly. On the other... they are tracking you...

Should I be scared or something? The music industry is experiencing record profits in the past decade, don't let their distorted 'sale' figures delude you.

Not scared... but record profits? Certain areas of the industry are seeing a rise (instrument sales, digital music sales, etc), but the record music industry in general is not on the rise. Music consumption is, however.. which is good news.
Physical sales are down 19%, Wal-Mart is the leading retailer worldwide. Big-box is tunneling in on a very limited amount of titles, making it very difficult to "share the wealth." iTunes is making up for much of the ground lost in the physical world, but is still primarily used by Apple as a loss-leader for their hardware. I will agree that their sales figures are quite conservative, and many companies are doing better than they would lead you to believe. However, to say the market of phonographic sales is experiencing "record profits" is, well... wrong.
Also, in response to "being scared":
RIAA Jury Finds Minnesota Woman Liable for Piracy, Awards $222,000 | Threat Level from Wired.com
RIAA Settles Kazaa Copyright Battle with Bronx Woman
I'm not advocating for using lawsuits as a way to pad lost revenue... but it does happen :O

Speaking as a long time collector of music I'll give you an example of my philosophy. Dark Side of the Moon, by Pink Floyd. I bought this album when it first came out in the 70's, I owned an 8 Track version as well,(Cassettes hadn't been offered yet), a few years later I bought a replacement record my original was showing signs of wear, then I bought a cassette as well on CrO2 the best quality they had to offer back then, then a new high end company offered a Master Recording version of DSOTM and it was 3 times the price of the regular album but I bought it as well, then CD's came out and of course I bought one as soon as it was available. Then a few years later a new improved CD was released, but I didn't run out and buy that version, then the DVD came along and they released Pulse with DSOTM in it's complete form. I have bought this album so many times that if I want to acquire the newest version by any means, I feel no guilt whatsoever about doing so, I have also gone to their concerts and bought T-shirts and other memorabilia as well like a good fan. My point is that I have spent enormous amounts of money over the years for this one album and the record company has made most of the profits not the band. For newer bands I understand the dilemma, however the avarice of the record companies is ridiculous, if I was a new band I would offer a free download of a few songs and then release the complete album in FLAC format with the album artwork liner notes as well, the record companies are no longer essential that is why they are fighting a losing battle at this time.(And I'm not a fan of i-tunes either but that's a subject for another day.)
So from a famous line in a current popular movie franchise, Pirate or...?
And yeah Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of rum...lol!.

"Physical sales are down 19%". This says it all. Digital anyone? Plus endorsements, concerts are both on the rise, and their are independent factors in the decline of physical sales.
