I've been in the mood for a certain sort of music lately but can't quite figure out what the genre is. The two closest songs I could find that sound like what I'm after is Billie Holiday's Gloomy Sunday and (somewhat) Jars of Clay's Sad Clown. Essentially I'm after a kind of depressing sort of music like you'd hear on a detective movie or something.

Can anyone name this genre and/or point me towards a few good songs like those I mentioned?

Wow. Billie Holiday is a classic. Well I know one her songs, "Strange Fruit," is a great song. It's sad, but that's what you might like.
