Thread: Layne Staley VS Chris Cornell

Default Layne Staley VS Chris Cornell

To me Cornell and Staley are the cream of the crop of frontment out of the grunge area. They both obviously sang with a great deal of pain. Powerfull lyrics as well as voices to get their messages across. Layne to me had a very diverse voice meaning he ha a bluessey voice at times and at others a very errie voice. Chris had at times a soothing voice and proved he is good on his own with has solo career. Layne had these belting notes that echoed pain not expressed IMO since Janus Jopiln. So my pick is slightly towards layne

I'll go with layne. It's not that i don't like Cornell, but his recent release disappointed me.

Chris Cornell and Layne Staley are both awesome and both have great voices, there's no doubt about that.

I'm going to go ahead and pick Layne, though. His voice just appeals to me a little bit more than Cornell's.

Greg, wth? You had to just pit them against each other like that?

They are both so different. And, I honestly think they are equally amazing so I will not choose between them.

However, if I had been forced at gun point, I would have leaned heavily to Cornell's side since I'm such a huge SG fan.

gotta go w/layne staley here. outside of soundgarden chris cornell hasn't really impressed me that much. and layne staley's work on AIC's dirt album is phenomenal. he's one of those singers that all rock singers should aspire to sound like. layne sings with so much emotion and its truly captivating.

These are my two favorite singers... Damn... Chris definitely has a better range... His screams from back in the day give me goosebumps... On the other hand, I picture Layne singing Love, Hate, Love... That song also gives me goosebumps... On the other hand, I picture Chris singing Call Me A Dog and that song gives me the biggest goosebumps out of any song... On the other hand, I picture Layne singing Don't Follow... That's one of my favorite songs ever... On the other hand, I picture Chris singing Mind Riot, which is one of my favorite songs... I also picture Chris singing Times Of Trouble... I'm also beginning to realize that a lot of Layne's shining moments were accompanied by Jerry Cantrell... Chris Cornell did it by himself... Two of my favorite of songs by Alice In Chains are Got Me Wrong and Right Turn... Got Me Wrong wouldn't have sounded as great without Jerry Cantrell and Right Turn was a combination of people... Chris Cornell screaming at the end of Right Turn gives me goosebumps... Actually, Right Turn gives me more goosebumps than Call Me A Dog, so forget the comment that I made earlier... I forgot to consider Mad Season, damn... While I love Mad Season, it's not going to help Layne enough... I pick Chris Cornell over Layne Staley...
    Stop being so damn introspective...

I love both but I think vocally that Cornells voice has been used with way more versatility than Laynes ever was. You always hear them parading pop singers with praise like they could sing the phonebook. That's Cornell! He could tackle any genre and he's had the balls to use his voice for that purpose right up to his latest (which I like). I'll be honest, Laynes songs have had more of an emotional impact on me but from an objective standpoint I'd be lying if I didn't choose Cornell! No one sounds like him or even dared to copy him!

Loved reading how you worked this out Freetime!

Also, liked Bry's post. But, they are both amazing and unique...and as Cowboy says shouldn't really be compared.

Layne, he is freaking awesome. Love AIC.

I just couldn't get into Soundgarden. I tried honestly.
