Default Favorite Soundgarden Album???

If you count the compilation album, Screaming Life/Fopp, Soundgarden had released six full albums... Screaming Life/Fopp was their first album and really showed their raw, experimental sound. Their next album was Ultramega OK, released in 1988, which is similar to Screaming Life/Fopp but not as raw. It still is an extremely raw, unclean album but it had a little more structure. In 1989, Soundgarden released Louder Than Love, which is much more refined than Ultramega OK and really shows off Chris Cornell's vocals. In 1991, Soundgarden released Ultramega OK, which is one of the most dynamic and intense albums that I've ever heard. Thayil busted out some amazing riffs on this album. In 1994, Soundgarden released their most commercially successful album, with Superunknown. It features Cornell's dark and depressing lyrics, along with a more alternative rock sound, instead of an alternative metal sound. In 1996, Soundgarden released their final studio album, Down On The Upside. It's definitely their lightest album but also their lengthiest album, holding 16 songs.

Which is your favorite Soundgarden album? I was stuck choosing between Badmotorfinger and Louder Than Love but I went with Louder Than Love...

They are all great, and there's no way I could pick a favorite. What I usually recommend as a place to start for someone just discovering SG, is Badmotorfinger/SOMMS and Ultramega OK.

In addition to the 6 albums in your poll they have an EP titled, Songs from the Superunknown, which was an audio only counterpart to the CD-ROM Alive in the Superunknown (which is out of print but included videos, a game and band photos etc). T

Here's a great acoustic version of Like Suicide. YouTube - Soundgarden - Like Suicide(acou.) - HQ Audio

The artwork looks very nice, thanks, haha... I was gonna add in the other EP's but I thought that it would be too much. If it was a contest between all of the EP's, I would definitely go with Loudest Love. Fresh Deadly Roses is one of my favorite Soundgarden songs, Heretic is awesome and their Come Together cover is amazing...

I picked Louder Than Love because it has a great vibe to it. It's so hard to try to explain the album to both Soundgarden fans and people who've never even heard of Soundgarden. It's a great transition between Ultramega OK and Badmotorfinger. It still has the evil sound and lyrics from the previous albums. "Watch for vipers and poison snakes" (That's what I mean by evil) And it has the dynamic sound that is heard on Badmotorfinger, with songs like Hands All Over and Gun. But it also doesn't have any fillers, unlike Ultramega OK, which has 666, 667 and One Minute Of Silence, which annoys me. They also weren't afraid to add in a song like Big Dumb Sex. If I could change one thing on the album, it would be to switch Full On (Reprise) with Fresh Deadly Roses from the EP. Fresh Deadly Roses would be the greatest closing track ever...

i haven't really jumped feet-first into the world of Soundgarden but what i've heard of them i really like. Thayil has a hell of a unique style, and Cornell is obviously a great vocalist. i might have to go out and get Badmotorfinger, which seems like the "start-out" record for Soundgarden newbies.

That's a great album to start out with. I think that most people would give Superunknown a listen first but you don't get a heavy sound out of that album. Badmotorfinger is one of my all-time favorites...
