Default Thinking of taking up bass guitar...any suggestions? Thoughts?

I'm too old to ever try to do anything with it other than have some fun and maybe make my kids laugh. However, I really think I'd like to try.

Regular guitar has too many strings for my feeble fingers...but the bass is more suited to me, I think.

What would you do?
Yeah you are all right. I hadn't thought of more than the fact that my fingers are a bit short and the idea of navigating 6 or more strings scares me.

I've been told that the fretting is harder on bass. Is that what you're referring to?

Good things to think about.

Thanks!

Having played bass guitar, I think going into it with the idea of "less strings = less complicated" is going to cach you off guard.

My tips:
- Try getting a used/chain store brand one first, so if you decide its not for you, its not such a blow to the bank.
- Take a lesson or two to learn the basics
- Get your kids in on it too, if you are serious about tryion gto learn, well ,the best way yo learn is to teach
- Make sure it fits comfortably, if youa re a lefty, I highly suggest a left-handed bass
- Practice, practice, practice, sleep, and then practice some more
- Since you don't intend on making a career out of it, don't worry about learning all the bginner songs and such, once you know the basics, you can pretty much play any song (I didn't say you could play it well, but you can play it)

Good Luck!

too old? dude, it's never too late unless your dead!! I think you should do it, if things really work out and you get really good the good news is that when it comes to bands being in need bass players are in demand.

Having played both, I would say that just because it has less strings - it is not less challenging. If you are in it for fun- go for it, find some songs you like and get the tab for it. Good luck.

Go for it! You can't do a whole lot playing SOLO on the bass, since it's usually a complimentary instrument. I play the bass. I've been playing since I was thirteen (ten years now) and I love it. It is by NO means easier than the guitar. In fact, in some aspects it's much more difficult. Anywho, if you're in it for the fun go for it.
I can play the guitar, too, but Bass is always my beloved. I learned the bass WAY before I learned guitar. I've only been playing the six string SERIOUSLY for about 4 years.
