Default for those who listen to "indie" and "underground" music...?

if you were a musician and had the opportunity to become BIG, whether that involved signing to a major label or having your song used in a car commercial (or an Apple commercial, since that seems to be the popular thing to do among "indie" bands) or WHATEVER, would you take it? not necessarily to make more money (because even some of the more established "indie" bands make less than a schoolteacher anyway), but to get your music OUT there.

and please don't just say "yes, i wanna be famous!!!" OR "no, i hate mainstream music!!!" i mean, you can if you wanna but those are the obvious ones here.
ok, i think you misread the question. i did say that it's NOT ABOUT THE MONEY. it's about getting your music out there. just to clarify, again, it's NOT ABOUT THE MONEY, in any case.
XxNon Conforming EmoxX, you fail so hard at being ironic it's not even funny.

I would sign to a major label, if i were still given complete Creative control of my music. why? i would have more money to MAKE music. i would have more resources and better equipment to make the music I want to make. there are countless bands out there who are limited to what kinda music they can make because they just can't afford it. i think it's wrong when people say that Money isn't important. EARNING money shouldn't be important, but HAVING money definitely is. i mean, you NEED money to put out records and tour and make music videos and for equipment and to travel. music is every bit a business as it is an art, you just can't let the business side of it interfere with the artistic side. THAT'S when things go wrong.

Major labels will take away more money anyway, so it's not like I'll make any more money in the end anyway than if i were signed to an independent label either way.

the point is: as long as people are hearing my voice out of my mouth and hearing the message in my music, it doesn't matter if i'm on a major label or on a car commercial, and i'm not gonna worry about losing my "indie cred."

well there's really no specific reason to do it or not to do it..for me...So I wouldn't see a difference.
But sometimes certain bands just over-commercialize their music, making it irritating...Indie or not....
If given the chance to sign on a major label, then sure, I could do it. It's not about the money, like you said. It's just there would be more opportunities for the music. And not all major label groups/artists are well known.

No. When your music becomes about the money and lifestyle is when your music loses its meaning. Music has always been about expression and who would want to live a life being rich all it does is corrupt. I mean look at the white stripes Jack still lives in a small house no more than any other normal man and records in his attic. Despite being incredibly successful. We can all learn from that.

If it were to be signed to a major label, I'd take the opportunity. I'd be able to get my music out to the world, but I'd make sure that I maintained the right to say when/where my music was used. I'm not crazy about using songs in commercials.
Also, I would be careful not to change my style to appeal to the norms. I'd get signed for doing something completely original, and I'd keep it that way.

I wouldn't, I'm in it for the music, not the money.
