you must check out Eric Solomon. I would definitely consider him "modern indie." His music is a mix of rock and jazz and comes together beautifully in catchy and authentic songs. Think Maroon 5/Gavin DeGraw but more ... soulful? Listen to some of his songs at www.ericsolomonmusic.com, My Reality is my favorite!
