Yea. All the best jazz is from the old days, back when it was popular. Even better, since many of those musicians are dead, the royalties are minimal or non-existent. I was able to buy a Dutch-made jazz collection of 100 classics in a record store in a MALL for only 4 dollars. =) Skip the expensive new crap, look for some old classics.
What old jazz have you explored already? Maybe I can give some advice one who you should listen too. 20th Century Masters has a few Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis (I think), and other famous jazz artists' top hits on single CDs (decently priced too). Buy a few of those, they should help you find new interests. Hope I could help!
