Because it makes me listen and think. It makes me appreciate the long tradition and legacy of artists who made jazz what it is today. Each tune is a very personal expression by the artist, whether it is his own composition or his interpretation of a standard or cover tune.
Please forgive the cliche, but jazz is a thinking-person's music. Most jazz listeners are independent, non-conformist, free-thinking individuals. At least, I'd certainly like to think I am like that!
