As you know, LG, I am not familiar with Gamma Ray. Metal just isn't my thing. BUT the album art is fantastic. I have said this before, I wont give a bad review if I haven't listened to the band, therefore, to be fair I will give them a listen

Thanks Neverlife and Magic, I'm going to add 3 more of their album covers just because I like them and they are very well done, and a picture of the band too. (And in case any of you ever wondered my Avatar was a modified copy of Majestic, (I've recently updated it to a new one.) and I see my friend Neverlife likes it too.)

A late reaction to Kamelot: I got to know them on Graspop (metal meeting). First off I thought: what a stupid voice to sing metal with, but after some songs I got convinced and bought me the Siege Perilous album right there, in front of the stage And later on also the black halo. It's great music. Just really great :-)

Still haven't had the chance to search around for Grendel. They aren't easy to find..None of my friends know 'em, and the Feedback (a metal music store) went broke a week ago... So my metal suply is down for the moment

Gamma ray rings a bell. And now it seems that I have some songs of them on a compilation I got from a friend last month. :-) Didn't get the chance to look into all the bands on that cd, but now I see that I should make some time to look into it nevertheless.

Nice journal btw.!

Thanks for reading my journal Oblivion, it was after reading your well written journal that I finally dusted mine off and did a new entry. Gamma Ray is a good band, if you are looking for the best CD they made, probably "Land of the Free" would be a near universal choice. I am biased I like all of their albums and have all of their studio works on CD now.

You got to go to Grasspop? Very nice!

Yeah, Kamelot's singer, the voice takes a while to get used to, but really it add's a whole new dimension to the music.

Graspop is only a few hours away for me.. It's about the only festival that's close... There's always Werchter, but you won't find metal at werchter...

Anyway: keep up the good work!

Default Helloween

"HELLOWEEN!"

Formed in 1984 Helloween has had a tumultuous career which in the music business is par for the course. Kai Hansen, Michael Weikath, Markus Grosskopf and Ingo Schwichtenberg were the first incarnation of the band. The 1st full length album "Walls of Jericho" helped to define Helloweens speed/melodic brand of heavy metal that became their trademark sound, however when touring in support of this album, Kai Hansen was having trouble playing guitar and singing at the same time so after the tour was over they searched for a new vocalist and found Michael Kiske. This was the classic line-up and after signing with a new label they released 'Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I" in 1987 and this album established them as major players in the European heavy metal scene. In 1988 they released "Keeper of the Seven Keys Part II" the most successful album Helloween ever recorded, originally they wanted to do a double album but the label disagreed so "Keeper" became part 1 and 2 instead of one album. Unfortunately at the height of their new success Kai Hansen quit the band after the European tour in support of "Keeper 2", many reasons were cited and it is still clouded in controversy.

Over the next few years legal issues and lack of direction crippled the band, numerous line-up changes took place, the original drummer Ingo Schwitchenberg committed suicide in 1995, a few years after being fired from the band for mental and drug issues. Michael Kiske was fired due to numerous creative disagreements with the direction of the band and still has hard feelings about the whole situation to this day. After a wandering in the wastelands without a complete line-up, no recording contract things looked bleak for the band, however like Rasputin the spirit of Helloween seemed to defy logic and continue to rise up from the ashes and surprise us. When Andi Deris replaced Kiske on vocals and Helloween returned to their metal roots they released 'Master of the Rings" in 1994 and it rejuvenated their enthusiasm and their fans. Followed by "The Time of the Oath", (Which was dedicated to their original drummer Ingo who killed himself in Hamburg by stepping in front of a train, very sad he never recovered from his drug addiction and losing his place in the only band he ever played in.) Helloween was all the way back in the upper echelons of the European metal scene once more.

In 1998 they released "Better than Raw" continuing their momentum and it was successful, then another setback, they recorded "The Dark Ride" and it failed to generate the interest of the previous records because of it's heavy dark natured sound and after some lengthy discussions, the line-up changed again amidst complaints that some members were more interested in side solo projects than the main band. It's sounds funny now but Michael Weikath sent Roland Grapow and Uli Kusch an e-mail informing them they were no longer part of the band. After the release of "Rabbit Don't Come Easy" Helloween was back again, an amazing resiliency in this band nothing seems to derail them for long. Then came the 3rd chapter of the Keeper series "Keeper of the Seven Keys - The Legacy" which has kept the creative fire burning in the band and their fans as well, very well received and critically acclaimed. They are now touring with Gamma Ray in the U.S. supporting their latest studio album "Gambling with the Devil" and will finish this years tour in Mexico before heading home, one of the highlights of this latest tour is when Kai Hansen comes back onstage to play some of their most famous early hits as the encores to finish the concert, I like it when a story comes full circle. I really like Helloween, they cover the full range of hard rock/heavy speed melodic metal and do it with style and are a true inspiration to any band or artist that runs into hard times and is tempted to give up, living proof that perseverance and talent can prevail if you keep working and creating quality music.
