Lord Grendel's Treasure Chest
|
|
I finally decided to get my own journal started. I will do all kinds of different music from the late 60's to some really good bands that I've discovered more recently.
First up is Kamelot, a band formed in 1991 by guitarist Thomas Younglood and drummer Richard Warner. From Florida they were a power metal band that have symphonic and progressive elements in their music. When Norwegian vocalist Roy Kahn joined the band in 1998 I think they finally had all the ingredients in place to do some great quality albums.
Current line up:
Thomas Youngblood - Guitar
Roy Kahn - Vocals
Glenn Barry - Bass Guitar
Casey Grillo - Drums & Percussion
Oliver Palotai - Keyboards.
Studio Discography:
Eternity - 1995
Dominion - 1997
Siege Perilous - 1998
The Fourth Legacy - 2000
Karma - 2001
Epica - 2003
The Black Halo - 2005
Ghost Opera - 2007
Live Albums:
The Expedition - 2000
One Cold Winter's Night - 2006
In 2008 they released a new edition of Ghost Opera with a bonus CD of live recordings and other songs.
My two favorite albums are The Black Halo and Ghost Opera, but I like this band and have collected all of their music now. Here are some videos for you to check out.

Nice Recommendations.

Grendel, a power metal band from Holland, this is their 3rd album I think, it's hard to find up to date info on these guys. However the cover is truly awesome and yeah I am biased. This album "See The Light", released in 2008 is very good, nothing spectacular but if you like European power metal then you would definitely like this CD.
Track listing;
1. See The Light
2. The Path And The King
3. Son Of The Rising Sun
4. Keepers
5. Grendel
6. Sangre
7. Nightmare
8. The Last Shelter
9. Mr. Roosters
10. Free To The End
11. Back To Back

These guys sound like Rush but they are actually good, or maybe Rush with a backbone. OK the secrets out I am not big Rush fan, oh well.
Either way these guys rock!

"Gamma Ray!"
Let's talk about a great power metal band formed by one of the founding members of Helloween, Kai Hansen. He left Helloween for reasons that are still murky to this day, one account says the band was to big for him to manage anymore, another suggests financial trouble and disagreements with the record company, whichever version is true he left in 1988. (He was quoted after the initial success of Helloween as saying that following the example of Rush would be a great way to grow and become one of the best hard rock/metal bands ever.) I offer this prehistory because after he left Helloween he formed "Gamma Ray", and it was his band, with no other dominant personalities to contend with. I stumbled across GR by accident while surfing the net, and was genuinely surprised by how good the music and songwriting was, Kai Hansen has really continued to progress as a songwriter/vocalist/guitarist and I think that he has surpassed Helloween's achievements with the catalog of albums that GR has produced. (Just thought I'd mention that I like Helloween too, and there are no hard feelings between the two bands, they have done more than one tour together, although Helloween has only one member left from the original lineup.) I have been avidly collecting most of the power metal bands from Europe the last few months and GR is my favorite so far.
Current Lineup:
Kai Hansen - Vocals, Guitars
Henjo Richter - Guitars, Keyboards
Dirk Schlachter - Guitars, Bass
Dan Zimmerman - Drums, Percussion
Studio Discography:
1990 - Heading for Tomorrow
1991 - Sigh No More

1999 - Powerplant
2000 - Blast from the Past* (Compilation 2 CD Set)
2001 - No World Order
2005 - Majestic
2007 - Land of the Free II
Live Albums:
1996 - Alive '95
2003 - Skeletons in the Closet
EP's Released:
1990 - Heaven Can Wait
1993 - Future Madhouse
1995 - Rebellion in Dreamland
1996 - Silent Miracles
1997 - Valley of the Kings
2001 - Heaven and Hell* (Released in Japan only)
