I thought pop stands for popular.
Doesn't that make all popular songs belong to the category of pop, weither it's rock, punk, or even classic?

Hello MusiqFan, to be honest I don't listen to the radio at all anymore, and I've given up on MTV as well, but thanks for listing the popular songs that are being overexposed for the moment at least.

First of all POP music don’t have any boundary line, it totally depends on the creation & Imagination. Attributes of POP music would be bounding of beats.

Pop music doesn't have to be crap. It's just what is POPular at the time. People that hate pop music just because it's popular are sad because they are shutting themselves off to a whole genre for no reason. Just because Britney may suck doesn't mean Rihanna does and vice versa.

The absolute definition of Pop music is purposefully flexible for a reason, pop music is ever changing. The best definition of Pop, is what music is currently hitting the charts.
To accurately define pop music you need to make a distinction between pop and popular. Popular is defined as any music that is in the tastes and interests of its listeners. This would include all genre of music, not just pop genre. Pop music is defined by the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians as music evolving out of the rock n roll movement of the 1950's and is continuing a definable path in music today. Since the 1950's, pop music has been defined as music which is accessible to the widest audience or what is selling the most.
Now to define Pop music structure, which is the true defining elements of the genre. What makes a pop song POP? well it is how it is written. Pop music is written most typically as a verse and repeated chorus. The length of the song characterizes it further, most pop songs are very short and are average 3 1/2 min in length. Pop music is a melting pot of music styles, it assimilates and borrows a wide range of styles from disco to R & B to country to rock to latin, which includes beats, etc. There is no certain beat that makes a song a pop song.
The main goal of pop songs is to appeal to the audience listening and viewing pleasures. And this includes the artist. Having sex appeal and good looks does help interest the widest audience.
OK...my OPUS is finished

I'm almost surprised you stayed awake long enough to write a post of that length Magic...lol. I won't go over the material that Magic has covered, but will talk about a band that although never one of my favorites did a few songs that I do like. ABBA, the Swedish phenomenon that have sold millions of records all over the world. They would get my vote as the best Pop group of all time(But honestly there isn't much competition I was never really a fan of most Pop bands, Sabbath, Purple, Zeppelin etc., those were the bands I liked when I was young). I watched a television special about the history of ABBA a couple of years ago, and the main singer songwriter, I can't remember his name, had a very specific formula for the number or notes per minute or second in his songs. I don't know the technical term for it but almost every ABBA song has the same bits per second count, and it was intentionally done.(The producer engineer were also integral to this method of assuring the right amount of music per time signature). So if you ever wondered why so many ABBA songs sounded the same that is why, they were designed to fit a template that was successful and proven to generate sales. I still like about three of ABBA's songs, but I had to admit knowing the way their music was consciously altered did change my perception of this group.

That is interesting, LG. Pop music usually does have a set pattern it follows. That is sometimes why you can pick out who the artist is after only 3 lines! This is the whole idea behind pop music, access a wide audience and appeal to the mass. Although, maybe it is just me, but I think the Pop music formulas have even went a step further to target certain consumer markets, ie. teens, dance clubs, etc.
I am guilty of being a fan of Pop music at one time <blush>. I listened to Wham! (george micheals), Cyndi Lauper, and Prince; all from the 1980's
And, I liked the Spice Girls. I have a DVD they made, too

It was very interesting from a scientific point of view Magic, there is a certain number of bit's per second/minute that somehow appeals to the largest number of fans, what got me was Bjorn?,,,the songwriter figured it out and they stuck with that formula reverse engineering their songs to fit the blueprint they Knew would be Popular. Smart I agree, but not very progressive on any level musically speaking.
