On top of the standards try Stiff Little Fingers, Wire, 999, Generation X, The Lurkers, The Voidoids, Stranglers, The Boys, The Vibrators, Dead Boys, Wire, X, Adverts, and the Ruts.
For a little later than the first few waves The Angry Samoans, Bad Religion, Agent Orange, Minor Threat, The Descendents, The Dead Kennedys, and the Circle Jerks.
For stuff even later than that, The Dwarves, Operation Ivy, Rancid, Green Day, Against Me!, Gun Club, The Hives, The Strokes, Social Distortion, NOFX, Common Rider, Pennywise and a lot of their peers are pretty good.
For the pre-punk punk rock go for The Stooges, The New York Dolls, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, The MC5, The Sonics, and even the Velvet Underground.
On the fringe Elvis Costello, the Strokes, Iggy Pop, Joy Division, The Jam, and The cure are cool.
