The Official Led Zeppelin Thread

"LED ZEPPELIN"
A classic band from the pioneer days of rock music, any comments or discussion is welcome.
Formed in 1968 Led Zeppelin is considered one of the first "Heavy Metal" bands, but they had such a wide variety of musical styles that it's hard to pin them down as just any one kind of music. They didn't do the usual promotional singles releases from their albums and helped to evolve the album oriented rock approach instead. To me they were simply an original groundbreaking band, there was only one Led Zeppelin and though they were imitated and inspired many other groups to follow their lead, they remained unique in the world of hard rock for over 12 years. Considered the greatest band of the 70's and the best hard rock band of all time they disbanded after the tragic death of John Bonham in 1980.(He died of asphyxiation in a pool of his own vomit after a day and night of continual drinking, it is so sad that so many great artists seem to end up the same way .)
Here is a promotional picture from 1969
John Paul Jones, Robert Plant, John Bonham, Jimmy Page.

One of my favorite Rock bands ever.
Stairway is the song that NOBODY doesn't know, even if they haven't heard it, they've heard of it.
When the Levee Breaks, Black Dog, Rock and Roll, Ramble On, Kashmir, and Moby D*ck are all also insanely great.
I'm a drummer, and John gave me so much inspiration for different beats from everything else and all the 8th note High Hat, 2/4 Snare beats. Wish I could have met him.

You have quite a few of my favorite songs in your list Dekoichi and I agree they are one of my favorite bands too, and Bonzo was one of the greatest drummers ever.

Yeah, my favorite band is The Foo Fighters, so seeing Jimmy play the encore with them on the Wembley DVD was great.
Not only was their songwriting amazing, they were great at their instruments. Jimmy is one of the iconic guitarist out there, and IMO Bonzo is the second best drummer out there, just because Buddy Rich was... well... Buddy Rich.

I can understand why Led Zeppelin can be called the Greatest Rock Band Ever, their music was really awesome. I remember watching 'Fast Times At Ridgemont High', when I heard 'Kashmir' it was like ... can't describe it. That song is so epic it isn't even funny. The funny of it was that I liked the B-side of Houses of the Holy and none of the A-side Ah, well, so many great songs...

Just some Zep trivia! Ever wonder what zoso means and why the symbols for the Led Zeppelin IV album?
Well here goes! all four members decided to come up with symbols which represented themselves.
John Paul Jones~~circle over three ovals=a person with competence and confidence.
Bonham~~three interlocking circles=man, woman, child trilogy (Bonham just liked it)
Plant~~circle with a feather=justice and fairness and is the symbol of a writer.
Page~~made his own "Zoso"=and it still remains a mystery today! it is the alchemical for mercury and some theorize it represents tantrical se x. In 1994 he was asked what it meant, he replied, "frying tonight"
Anyway, just thought you would find this interesting.

They were definitely into the mysticism of the whole rock star scene, I think Bonzo could have put a collection of his favorite beverages as his sign...lol. Seriously for a minute, it is well known that Page dabbled in the occult and that Plant was freaked out about the whole thing and leaned on Bonzo as his big brother, that was one reason the band broke up after Bonham's death, Plant didn't want to be without him on the road.

I read the article in this mornings paper, but if Page, Jones and John Bonham's son Jason want to tour as Led Zeppelin then all the power to them. This reminds me of the Pink Floyd split when 3/4's of the band kept the name despite Roger Water's lawsuit, if Plant wants to take 2 years off after his current tour with Alison Krause then there's not much fans can do about it.
I do find it a little strange that he doesn't want to do a full Led Zepp tour unless it involved new material, I mean WTF! does it hurt to do one more tour for your die hard fans and then hang it up, we're not talking about a Rolling Stones issue where they'll be doing live shows even when they are in wheelchairs or walkers. Go out in a blaze of glory and have a little fun.
