Personally, if you don't mind me saying, I think the modern day bands are pretty great. AC/DC would be best IMO for like old rock, but for today's music, here's my list of the greatest(not in order):

Trapt
Breaking Benjamin
Coldplay


But thats just me.

Notice the '' around modern. It refers to a specific brand of insipid post-grunge. Rock band I would recommend? How 'bout Leaf Hound, My Bloody Valentine or The National.

Blind Faith or any Eric Clapton associated bands
Allman Brothers Band
Aerosmith
The Band
Bruce and the E street
The Doors
Led Zeppelin
RHCP
Rolling Stones
Rush
Pink Floyd (Maybe?)
The Who

Getting me to narrow those down is like getting Fox news to admit there biased.
