You should study music and then music theory first. You need to understand how music notes relate to chords and which chords can be used in the key you're writing in.
First you can write a melody - but if you do , then what chords are you going to use? Do you want a bright song that makes you float on air, or do you want a dark song that makes you feel sad? Good artist know this before they start. They know how to control a mood with music. How to reach out and grab the listeners heart and pull them into a song.
Next do you know how to create a musical Hook, a hook is the melody part of a song that people just can't get out of thier head.....such as the bass line in the song Pretty Woman. The Hook sells the song 90% of the time.
Next you must realize that writing poems and writing lyrics are different.
The music controls the lyrics , your lyics must move smoothly within the music, you can't just throw in extra words and race through the timming because you think you have a great lyric....changes have to be made to fit the lyrics into the music.
A good writer can do this fast. Sometimes a great song takes only an hour to write, some times a great song takes years to write, it just depends on when you realize what you want to say and do in the song.
The music controls the mood, the Music make the lyrics speak to the listeners heart. So it comes down to ....how good a story teller you are with in the Rhythm of the music.
The best way to write music with lyrics I found is by writing the music first, then don't rush the song, try and hear the words in the song, it could take weeks or months, but trust me one day you'll start sing your song from your heart and the words will come.
Also no song is really great without a good lead music part, should be a guitar. You need to figure that in also and how you're going to end the song. Great songs have great endings most of the time.
I usally write about 10 to 20 songs a year, I use to write the lyrics first, now I write the music first, and wait till I have the best lyrics that fit the music.
